Overview of Lesson: Students will write letters to environmental groups working to save the rain forest. They will use email and USPS.
Standards: English Language Arts Composition PreK-4 2020
Select and use appropriate genres, modes of reasoning, and speaking styles when writing for different audiences and rhetorical purposes.
English Language Arts Composition PreK-4 2022
Use their knowledge of standard English conventions for sentence structure, usage, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling to edit their writing.
Student Outcomes: Students will write a letter.
Length of Lesson: two 45 minute sessions

Essential Questions: As a student what can you do to help save the rain forest?
Material / Resources Needed: letter writing poster, Writing Notebook, computer, printer, the addresses of environmental organizations
Instructional Strategies: demonstration, writing
Activity or Procedure: Use the letter writing poster to demonstrate the form to follow when writing a letter. Talk about organizations that work to save the rain forest. Have children list reasons for writing to the organizations. Write their letters on the computer. Some will be emailed using the teachers school account and others will be sent via USPS.
Assessment: properly written letters
Evidence that Student Learning Occurred: Students will be able to write a letter informing organizations of our school project and request information.
