Lesson Title: Essential Questions Answered
Unit Title: Save the Rain Forest
Grade: 2/3
Discipline: English Language Arts, Science, Technology and Human Affairs

Overview of Lesson: Students will be organized into ecology/environmental groups and write up a report that answers the projects essential questions. They will present a slide show to highlight the report.

Standards: English Language Arts Media PreK-4 2026
Obtain information by using a variety of media and evaluate the quality of the information obtained.
English Language Arts Language PreK-4 2003
Make oral presentations that demonstrate appropriate consideration of audience, purpose, and the information to be conveyed.
Science, Technology and Human Affairs PreK-4 5080
Give examples that we (as individuals, groups, and communities) can make decisions that change the natural environment.


Student Outcomes: Students will list reasons for saving the rain forest and how we can be affected if the rain forest is destroyed. They will produce a slide show to accompany their written reports of their findings.

Length of Lesson: five or six 45 minute to one-hour sessions

Instructional Mode: small group

Multiple Intelligences: Linguistic, Visual-Spatial, Interpersonal

Essential Questions: What are the reasons for saving the rain forest and if the rain forests are destroyed how will that affect us?

Material / Resources Needed: computer, printer, Power Point Presentation Software

Instructional Strategies: research, cooperative groups, hands on activity

Activity or Procedure: Students will use print outs from various web sites to find reasons for saving the rain forest and the affect on us if the rain forests are destroyed. They will type and print their findings in a report. They will also produce a slide show to accompany their report.

Assessment: Each group will complete the activity following all the directions.

Evidence that Student Learning Occurred: An adequate number of reasons for saving the rain forest will be included in the report along with how the destruction of the rain forests affects us. A slide show presentation will be produced.
